Police to arraign UNILAG lecturer for alleged rape

A female undergraduate student (name withheld) has accused a lecturer at the University of Lagos, Akoka, simply identified as Dr Kadiri, of rape.

The undergraduate said the incident occurred when she visited the lecturer in the office to sort out issues about her results.

A non-governmental organisation, Inclusive Social Welfare and Empowerment Foundation, where the victim reported the case, said rather than the lecturer attending to the undergraduate’s result issues, he allegedly raped her on August 16, 2023.

It was  gathered that InclusiveSWEF reported the case to the Gender Unit of the state police command and through the OC Gender, the state CP, Idowu Owohunwa, issued a warrant of arrest for the lecturer through the state High Court and involved the Vice Chancellor of the university.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, saying, “He is to appear in court in the coming days.”

Reacting, the spokesperson for UNILAG, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, said that the university was aware of an investigation involving an employee of the university.

She said, “UNILAG Management, on August 28, received a letter from the Nigeria Police Force, inviting an employee of the university for questioning. The employee was immediately informed of the development and advised to comply.

“On August 29, the employee complied. While we are not yet privy to the full details of the incident that led to the arrest of the employee, we are fully aware that the investigation is ongoing and we are cooperating with security agencies to ensure that the matter is resolved in the interest of justice.”

Three die in Ilorin after rival cults clash

The police in Kwara State, yesterday, confirmed the death of three middle/aged men suspected to be members of rival cult groups in Ilorin, the state capital.

The deceased persons believed to be members of opposing cult groups died in Idi-Ape, Gambari, Baboko, and Surulere areas of Ilorin metropolis.

Spokesperson for the Command, Ajayi Okasanmi, told newsmen that the police would arrest leaders of the outlawed groups for prosecution.

Okasanmi urged parents in the state to warn their children and wards against cultism. He also advised members of the public to report suspected cases of cultism to the police via hotlines released by the law enforcement agency.

Okasanmi assured residents of Idi-Ape, Gambari, Baboko, and Surulere areas of Ilorin metropolis that the command was doing all within its powers to put a stop to the recent activities of suspected cultists in the area.

He said: “The command has commenced aggressive raids of black spots, stop-and-search and a total clampdown on motorcycles and tricycles operating outside the time permitted by the law, between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00p.m. daily.”

He explained that the measures were in place to mitigate activities of the deviants.

“Anyone found committing any crime, especially cultism, regardless of any nomenclature, would be arrested and prosecuted.”

17-year-old boy locks in parents, steals car, others

A 17-year-old boy identified simply as Ayomiposi Esan has allegedly stolen three mobile phones, two generator sets, a sound system and a Toyota Corolla car belonging to his parents identified as Mr Oluwafemi and Mrs Tosin.

The boy ran away with the items after locking his parents inside the house in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

It was gathered that on September 3, 2023, the suspect was said to have broken into the house in the wee hours of the night while the couple were asleep in the apartment.

A source in the area, who did not want to be mentioned because he was not authorised to speak for the family, told our correspondent that it took a joint effort of other residents to free the parents from the apartment after their son fled the scene with the stolen items.

After the victims reported the incident to the Ogijo Divisional Police Station, a Superintendent of Police, Awode Olatunde, led his men in hot pursuit of the suspect, leading to his arrest in Lagos while he (Ayomiposi) was looking for buyers for the stolen items.

17-year-old boy locks in parents, steals car, others

Kindly share this story:

A 17-year-old boy identified simply as Ayomiposi Esan has allegedly stolen three mobile phones, two generator sets, a sound system and a Toyota Corolla car belonging to his parents identified as Mr Oluwafemi and Mrs Tosin.

The boy ran away with the items after locking his parents inside the house in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that on September 3, 2023, the suspect was said to have broken into the house in the wee hours of the night while the couple were asleep in the apartment.

The source said, “The boy had successfully sold one generator set he stole. The father is preventing the police from prosecuting the son after his arrest. The police wanted the boy to be prosecuted for his action, but the parents said they wanted him to be released along with the stolen items.”

Speaking on the matter, the state Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Wednesday, said the force intended to prosecute the boy but could not do so since the parents had opposed it.

Odutola said, “The course of the investigation was truncated by the complainant, who was equally the biological father of the suspect, as he vehemently declined prosecution of his son, one Ayomiposi Esan. He wanted his son and the recovered stolen goods, including the car, released.

“In the spirit of community policing and taking into consideration the image of the force so that police will not be seen as being too harsh on him and his family, the teenage son was consequently released with his property on bond.

“However, the son was counselled, cautioned, and advised to turn a new leaf and shun further indulgence in all forms of delinquency to avoid future occurrences.”

Labour Party Rejects Tribunal’s Judgement

The Labour Party (LP) has expressed dismay and trepidation over the dismissal of petitions by the five-man panel of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) led by Justice Haruna Tsammani.

The tribunal had ruled on the petition filed by the party and its Presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The tribunal had struck out the petition filed against President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, declaring it as incompetent.

Reacting, National Publicity Secretary of LP, Obiora Ifoh, said justice was not served and it did not reflect the law and the desire of the people.

“Nigerians were witnesses to the electoral robbery that took place on February 25, 2023, which was globally condemned but the Tribunal in its wisdom refused to accept the obvious.

“What is at stake is democracy and we will not relent until the people will prevail.

We salute the doggedness of our team of lawyers who fearlessly exposed the wrath in our system. We can only weep for democracy in Nigeria but we refuse to give up on Nigeria,” Ifoh said.

He said that details of the party’s position will be presented after consultation with their lawyers after the Certified True Copy of the judgement is made available to the party.

He also urged all lovers of democracy to remain focused and hopeful because a new Nigeria is possible.

Atiku, Obi plan appeal as election tribunal dashes bid to sack Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, and his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi, have rejected Wednesday’s judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal affirming the election of President Bola Tinubu.

The Legal Adviser to the Labour Party, Kehinde Edun, vowed to challenge the judgment at the Supreme Court.

Also, Atiku’s Lead Counsel, Chris Uche,  SAN, said he had received instructions from his client to file an appeal at the Supreme Court.

He said “The judgment has been delivered but we have not received justice. Luckily, the law has given us leverage to go on appeal to the Supreme Court. We have instructions from our clients to go to the Supreme Court. The struggle continues.”

The PEPT which began sitting at 9.40am at the Court of Appeal, Abuja, ruled that the petition filed by Atiku and Obi and their parties had no merit and unanimously upheld Tinubu’s electoral victory in the February 25 presidential election.

The five-member panel took turns to dismiss the petitions presented by Atiku and Obi against the declaration of Tinubu as the winner of the presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission on March 1, 2023.

The judgment was delivered by the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Haruna Tsammani, assisted by other members of the panel-Justices Stephen Adah, Monsurat Bolaji-Yusuf, Moses Ugo and Abba Mohammed.

The National Legal Adviser of the LP, Edun, expressed disappointment with the judgment, stressing that the tribunal was unfair to reject 10 of their 13 witnesses, adding that the decision weakened their case.

Edun said, “We already had a premonition that this might happen. For example, where the court was saying the statements of some key witnesses should have been filed along with the petitions. How can that be? Subpoena is an order of court by which the court has compelled a witness to come and give evidence before or as of the time you are filing the petition.

‘’This is because I have not assumed jurisdiction, the tribunal has also not assumed jurisdiction.  We are just filing. It is only after filing that the court assumes jurisdiction, not before. So how can you file a witness statement at the time of filing the petition? It is when the court signs the subpoena.”

  1. Money doesn’t attract money. Money attracts thieves. Value attracts money. The quicker you come to terms with this principle, the faster you move up the echelons of life.
  2. Pain motivates people to take action two times more than pleasure. Therefore, your chances of getting rich are two times more if you provide solutions that alleviate pain than solutions that derive pleasure.
  3. The only psychology you need to know to become highly successful is that humans are hopelessly lazy. Therefore, if you transform your mindset even slightly to become action-oriented, you will excel above others in whatever you do.
  4. Do not oversleep when you’re just starting out in business. The business needs to have a life of its own before it can take off and allow you to rest. If you rest before the business starts to walk, the business will die a premature death, and you will also eventually die financially.
  5. To succeed as an entrepreneur, provide a service to people that will make them comfortable and make you uncomfortable. This will motivate them to transfer money into your pocket to enable you to enjoy a comfortable life in the future.
  6. Money has never been a catalyst for success, but an effect of success. Most businesses fail because they put money first instead of the customer. In fact, highly successful businesses only think about customer satisfaction when dealing with customers—never about the money.
  7. Failure in school is not the same as failure in life. Most people who excel in class are good candidates for the job market and bad candidates for the business world. In the business world, failure is inevitable, as you will try many things that will not work. However, if you keep trying and failing, one day you will try something that will work.
  8. Do not seek to be successful. Seek to become a man or woman of value. Success follows value.
  9. Success is not the result of money. Money is the result of success. Similarly, happiness doesn’t follow success—success follows happiness.
  10. Success always stays with the most disciplined and focused person. Not the slob.
  11. To become highly successful, you must dedicate yourself to lifelong learning. Not in the academic sense of the word, but in the personal development sense of the word—also known as self-education.
  12. Your mind, body, and spirit are as important to your success as your life. Therefore, feed them, train them and nourish them well.
  13. Do not re-invent the wheel if the wheel is still functional. Let others re-invent wheels while you ride in the car.
  14. The secret to success is habit, and the key to success is to change all your bad habits. Bad habits lead to disappointment, failure, misery, and misfortune. Good habits lead to success, excellence, happiness, and good luck.
  15. Never give up as long as you’re pursuing a worthy cause. But then why should you waste your valuable time pursuing an unworthy cause?
  16. Try something at least 20 times before you finally call it quits. By then you should have explored every possible means to do it and learned everything about it. Even then, don’t give up yet. Give it another try and ask around. Maybe there’s someone who has tried it before and succeeded.
  17. Successful people are those people who defeat failure, endure hardship, burn the midnight oil, persist with vigour, overcome shame and conquer their self-ego.
  18. You can never defeat the spirit of a potentially successful person. They understand themselves. They constantly weight themselves on the success scale and they constantly watch their goal.
  19. Push yourself constantly and be consistent to ensure your personal growth. Remember, no one else is responsible for your life—and your life doesn’t belong to anyone else but you.
  20. Put yourself first before anyone else. Love yourself before you love others. If you find a life partner, love them and help them grow if they agree to be helped. Find a partner who is compatible and can build you up—not one that will pull you apart.
  21. No one should ever tell you that you can’t do it. Only you, know and understand yourself better than anyone else.
  22. Don’t be selfish. If you become successful even at the smallest of things, help others to get to where you’ve been. They will be grateful and return the favour in ways you don’t know. Others will be more successful than you and praise you for the rest of their lives.
  23. Not showing gratitude even for the little things you receive in life is selfish. Being grateful for what you have shows that you appreciate your blessings and increases your capacity to receive more.
  24. Give. Give away your time. Give away your attention. Give away your old stuff. Give away free stuff. Give away your knowledge. Give away your money. The more you give the more space you create to receive more.
